Top Neighborhoods for Expats in Beijing: A Guide to Living, Working, and Thriving in China’s Capital

Chinese culture is one of the most complex and ancient in the world (going back more than 5,000 years) as it has a large number of customs and traditions in a large geographical area, not only within the country, but also outside its borders, throughout East Asia. Living in China offers a distinctive combination of rich history, diverse culture, and modern conveniences. The country’s vast size and varied landscapes provide residents with a wide array of experiences, from lively urban centers to serene countryside. While living costs can vary by city and lifestyle, China typically maintains a relatively affordable standard of living compared to many Western countries. Residents can benefit from reasonable prices in housing, transportation, and dining, allowing for a high quality of life without significant financial strain. Here is an overview of the recommended neighborhood for you:

Chaoyang District

Chaoyang is located and covers the east of the Beijing area. This area is known for diplomatic districts where most of the foreign embassies are located. It is very popular among expats due to the location of international companies and international schools. With the international communities at large, this area is great for families and is equipped with the best stores such as supermarkets and shopping malls for a family’s needs.

Sanlitun

Sanlitun is located on the western side of Chaoyang District and is well-known as a hotspot for nightlife and parties. Celebrated for its lively atmosphere, the area offers some of the finest pubs and nightclubs around. It’s an ideal place for young professionals and singles who love to unwind and enjoy the city after a long day at work. Sanlitun also features a diverse selection of shopping venues, including trendy malls, and a wide array of restaurants serving everything from traditional Chinese dishes to Western cuisine. There are also many new luxury housing complexes in the Sanlitun area as well as an abundant selection of mid-upper tier local housing popular with young expats.

Shunyi

Located just outside 5th Ring Road to the northeast about 18 miles (30km) out of downtown, this spacious suburban district has been developed as a high-end villa district. Most popular high-end villa compounds are nestled in the west of Beijing Airport Expressway, along Jingshun Road and Wenyu River. This district offers an excellent living environtment for families with children and people who prefer a lifestyle of leisure, outdoor space, and want to escape the pollution of Beijing. Expats can easily find amenities like restauratns, supermarkets, coffee shops, banks, grocery stores, pet shops, beauty salon and flower market. However a car is likely needed for daily transport.

Haidian

Haidian is situated on the northwest side of the city and is recognized as the educational district, home to numerous universities and colleges. This area is particularly popular among young students and single expats, who can choose to live in either apartments or traditional Hutongs. Additionally, Haidian is favored for its relatively affordable bars and attractive rental options. Buildings and neighborhoods are older in this area and housing options for expats looking for home comforts are limited. However, mid-tier housing can be found near the universities for a relatively cheaper price than it is in the city center like Chaoyang.

Dongcheng

One of the most vibrant areas in Beijing, Dongzhimen is beloved among expat families living in Beijing. The area is conveniently situated, with the city’s largest public transport hub nearby. Despite its central location, there is an abundance of trees and the newly renovated canal system is a wonderful place for romantic evening strolls under the willows. The rent here is also cheaper compared to the city centre, making it accessible for young professionals on a budget.
